I love the future [21 Dec 2009|08:35pm]

I got my n900 from the UPS man today!

It is so freaking awesome!

I have never had a phone that can do anything other than send text messages, so am pretty easily impressed, but I am in so much love right now.
Now all I need to do is get a phone plan so I can use it outside...

German traditional costume is notable for its eccentricities, but these bridal crowns must be some of the most extraordinary. This is from St Georgen in the southern reaches of the Black Forest.

17th Century Gowns [20 Dec 2009|11:40pm]

While I can't say that 17th century fashion is my particular favorite, I do love the amount of lace detail seen on the ruffs and the gowns. I just wanted to share some pictures I found particularly striking.

Some of the pictures were really large, so if you want to view a larger and more detailed image of one of the works, you can go to my lj picture gallery.

Work: Portrait of Margherita Gonzaga
Artist: Frans Pourbus the Younger
Date: C. 1605.

Cirque Du Freak! [20 Dec 2009|04:21pm]

Can I get a woop woop?

Or not.

We went to see Cirque du Freak: Vampire's Assistant today, and it was so great! I have a vampire crush on John C Reilly now, who'd have thunk it? So cute and over it all! And he wears fabulous vampire clothes but looks quite dorky! LOVE.

Plus we went to see it at the rad cinema, so it was 75 cents each. ZOMG

As a sort of lead-in to my upcoming solo show at the Hatch Gallery/Sticker Museum in Berlin, I agreed to submit a piece for the Oversized and Underpriced charity art auction. I’m remiss in my posting here, as this actually happened tonight (or is happening right now).

This is probably going on right now.

This is probably going on right now.

60 + artists create an oversized version of the Urban Art sticker classic “POST PÄCKCHEN”
The DIN A3 unique stickers will be presented in the exhibition “OVERSIZED & UNDERPRICED” at the museum in
Berlin-Friedrichshain and will be auctioned for a social purpose.

Opening Event: 17th December, 19:00 @ hatch, Dirschauer Str. 16, 10245 Berlin-Friedrichshain
Exhibition: December 17th -20th and from January 6th -24th
Opening times: We -Fr: 13:00-19:00, Sat/Sun: 14:00-18:00
December 20th & January 24th: Coffee / Cake / Art Sundays (for free)

In order to collect more donations with OVERSIZED & UNDERPRICED ROUND TWO, this time the art pieces will be auctioned, starting from the date of opening: 17th of December 2009 on
www.hatchkingdom.com & www.myspace.com/oversizedandunderpriced.
Bids to: info@hatchkingdom.com or directly on myspace.

From February, a tour of the exhibition is planned – until the end of this tour it is possible to bid for the auction by email for everyone.
The Benefit will be donated to the following three purposes:
- For the “Christoffel Blind Mission, an organization who operate on people worldwide in crisis areas, which suffer symptoms of eye cataract.
With only 30, – Euro for one operation people get his eyesight again.
- Another part is used – as in the previous year – for the project “Skateistan”, a skateboarding school in Afghanistan initiated by two Australians.
- A final part is the preservation of the sticker museum.

My piece for the show was rush-shipped to Berlin and arrived TODAY. I don’t know if it made it into this vernissage or not, but it will be in the show proper, and will tour with the rest of the artworks through Europe.

Noodles.

Noodles.

If you are interested in purchasing Robot Noodle Screentone Study, please contact Oli at Hatch Kingdom: info@hatchkingdom.com

Unfortunately I don’t know the price yet, as Oli was going to decide that himself. I’m guessing the bidding will start around €10 and go up as bids come in.

I really, really wish I could be in Berlin for this.

Mr. Louie and I met at one of his art openings in Seattle, a few years ago. Since then, we've kept in touch, and I've sent him photos when he asked. This is our first collaboration, and there promises to be more in the offing.

Well, Liselotte's plan worked..... I didn't dream about ham last night, oh no.

Potter is a boy, not a piece of meat! )

We were drinking some cherry wine we'd made which was probably responsible... The Elderflower one & peach ones are almost done-ish, and there's pear cider on the go as well. FIVE GALLONS OF IT ON THE BREW, YO.

BAT NIPPLES = GOOD MUSIC

CODPIECES = GOOD MUSIC

(reposted from Tumblr)

Picked up another copy of the Lost Highway soundtrack, which I haven’t had since it went missing sometime before I had the ability to rip mp3s. I believe my original copy of the disc was found in a CD notebook someone had lost out a car window on the side of the road. It contained a lot of discs that, while cheesy to the extreme on the surface, were incredibly cool (to a 14-year-old) once broken in. Lost Highway, yes, but also Spawn, Mortal Kombat, and Batman Forever (Michael Hutchence, Nick Cave, and even U2, who had on that disc the only cool U2 song outside of the Million Dollar Hotel score). And of course, one copy of Jagged Little Pill. Because there didn’t exist a stack of CDs in the 90s that didn’t contain at least one copy of Jagged Little Pill. Don’t ask me why; it was some sort of corollary to the laws of physics, subtly altered during that particular era.

You had no idea this wasn't a terrible album.

You had no idea this wasn't a terrible album.

The real hidden gem in that collection was Joan Osborne’s “Relish”, the album that hosted her one and only hit, “What If God Was One of Us”. A more irritating song, I have trouble summoning. Despite this, the rest of the album was not only good, it was totally unlike its flagship track. And this is where I first discovered one Law of Pop Music: the radio hit of a given band will bear no resemblance to the rest of that band’s output. This Law is true for all bands that are popular enough to get on air, but not popular enough to stay there. See also: Smashmouth, Chumbawamba, Orgy…

Of course, this makes it that much more difficult for the bands in question. Because before Napster, we actually bought albums based on what we heard on the radio. So you’d buy, say, Fush Yu Mang based solely on your love for “Walkin’ on the Sun”. Expecting funkiness, you ended up with some sort of speed-ska. But if you hated “What If God Was One of Us”, you’d assume Osborne was some boring Christian folk bitch, and you’d never buy Relish, and you’d never hear her cover of Bob Dylan’s “Man in the Long Black Coat”, which unapologetically owns.

Sing, brothers, of the only mullets to look good since Legend. And verily, the last to do so.

Sing, brothers, of the only mullets to look good since Labyrinth. And verily, the last to do so.

These lone Misfit Hits are not to be confused with the other solitary song types, the Single, and the Missionary. A Single you’re already familiar with; sometimes it’s a Mis-Hit (but not always), and sometimes it’s truly a good song. It comes out on an EP with some mixes, usually. But the Missionary song is special. A Missionary song cannot, by its very nature, be a Mis-Hit, since it represents with sincerity the rest of the band’s catalog. The Missionary song has one purpose, and that is to be the song that converts you into a fan. It’s catchy, but it might not be the band’s best song. It eases you into the rest of the catalog without being too challenging. It teaches you the band’s language. This is the song you send to your friends when you want them to hear and understand what it is you’re obsessed with.

If they don’t want to hear more after hearing this, they probably never will. A list of Missionaries follows:

“The Mariner’s Revenge” by the Decemberists
“The Weeping Song” or “The Curse of Millhaven” by Nick Cave
“Karma Slave” by Splashdown
“Think of England” by IAMX
“The Enemy Guns” by DeVotchKa
“Southern Belles in London Sing” by the Faint
“We Share Our Mother’s Health” by the Knife
“Hello Seattle” by Owl City

It’s subjective, of course, up to a point. What draws one bastard into a fandom won’t be exactly what draws another. And some people just have bad taste and you’ll never be able to help them, ever, not without a hammer and a pair of Sennheisers. But sometimes, quality is objective. Sometimes, you can show people the way. And that’s what Missionary Songs are for.

An entire string section of Batmans? Don't mind if I do!

Chrissie and I went to see 'everyone's fine' today.

I cried through pretty much the whole thing. I think it was a lot to do with being so far from my parents, but also I mean, all the years spent of like, hiding who I really am from them for fear of upsetting them. Like, they're smart people, they know what's really going on. I'm doing nobody any favours.

So I've just written my dad an e-mail telling him how much I love him and how grateful I am for him being the father he was and is. I'm still crying now. His father died when he was 27. Like, fuck, you know? I'm so so lucky that he is still there to be able to say it to, you know?

So then afterwards we went to see New Moon, just so we would have something to laugh about, and FTW shirtless gay disco werewolves that only kill wampires?? I nearly wet myself. Can that series water down the dark side any further?? Oh yeah, Mummies just love eating tacos!

Yesterday we went to this place called Hot Springs. It's called that because there are hot springs there. The weather was all cold and rainy, so it was really steamy, and foggy and pretty.

We ate enchiladas and a squirrel sat in a tree and flicked its tail and barked at me.

And it totally only occurred to me yesterday that I now live in a place where fireworks are legal.
